KRLL Script for 3/28/08
Hi, this is Lisa Marshall with your library update from the Wood Place Public Library.
If you have visited the library recently, especially between 3 and 5 in the afternoon, you may have noticed how busy our public access computers have become. When school is out, they sure fill up! Students and adults both are using the library’s public access computers more and more these days. They use them to: research homework, type up a number of things (not just homework – the grown-ups are in on it too with letters, club meeting minutes, etc.), pay bills on-line, chat via e-mail, play games, read or listen to jokes… the list of things we use computers for keeps growing!
And, some of us don’t have a computer at home; or we have a slow dial-up connection; or we have to share our home computer with two or more family members; and there is the very frustrating situation when your home computer is out of commission. So, it’s no surprise to see more and more of us here at the library using this public service.
This week at the library we received some very welcome news that all of you who at one time or another rely on the library’s public access computers will welcome: The technology grant we applied for has been approved! Now, it will take a while to get paperwork done; equipment ordered and installed – but when we are done – all of the older computers at the library will be replaced with this grant funding; we’ll add two additional computers with desks that are adjustable for better handicap access and we’ll have wireless internet access too!
This summer will most likely be a very busy time for library staff – we are having extra programming for our summer reading programs, we’ll be coordinating the new computer equipment installation and since both the extra summer programming and new computer equipment are being paid for with grant funds – library staff will have extra reporting duties to take care of this summer. I know it will be well-worth our efforts to provide California and Moniteau County with more and better library services!
You can read all about upcoming events on the library’s web page: www.woodplacelibrary.org.
Visit the website to see a list of the new books, the book club meeting dates and everything that is going on here at the library. Again, the website is www.woodplacelibrary.org .

Hi, this is Lisa Marshall with your library update from the Wood Place Public Library.
I want to be sure and mention that the afternoon walking class the library is sponsoring has been extended. Originally it was to be over at the end of February and now it will run all the way through March 11. This is a free class – being held every Tuesday and Thursday from 1;30 to 2:30 at the gym at the UCC church. Everyone is welcome to join in.
Last week I talked about how I found out there would be a traveling exhibit featuring the work of luthiers – the craftsmen who repair and make by-hand fiddles and other stringed instruments. You may remember the exhibit is titled “Work is Art and Art is Work” and I talked about reserving the exhibit and applying for a grant to help cover the costs of bringing it here to California. Of course the exhibit is here now – it’s on display at the Wood Place Public Library.
Well today, I have the “rest of that story”
The date was Tuesday, January 29: the day had started out warm. Maybe you remember the day? – it started out at almost 60 degrees – then the temperatures dropped, and the wind blew, and it started snowing. The windchills were below zero and there were blizzard warning for northern Missouri.
So – this is when the big delivery truck pulls up to the front door of the Wood Place Public Library! And you should have seen the first crate that had to come in the front door of the library! It was huge! The delivery guy didn’t have a helper, just one of those power-lift dolly things and the crate was really too big for that. Luckily, there happened to be two young healthy looking guys happened to be using two of the library’s public access computers at that time and they gave us a hand getting that large crate in the library. I didn’t get their names, but if you guys are listening – THANKS SO MUCH!
So, we got he exhibit in, and set up in time for our grand opening on Feb. 7 – and the bluegrass band that we had that evening was just superb!
We have another live performance with a different artist coming up on Friday the 22nd, so if you missed the first one, be sure to come see that at 6:30 that evening - again, that’s Friday the 22nd. And, the exhibit will be on display thru March 10 – so be sure to come see it!
Also, a reminder you can still join the group walking over at the UCC gym on Tuesday and Thursday – their last day will be March 11.

Hi, this is Lisa Marshall with your library update from the Wood Place Public Library.
We have a new traveling exhibit here at the library. It is titled “Work is art and Art is Work” and it features the work of luthiers, the craftsmen who make fiddles and other stringed instruments. The exhibit includes 6 instruments several tools that are actually used to make the instruments, lots of photographs showing the work and of course text panels explaining everything. Someone asked me how this exhibit came to be at the library, so today, I thought I’d just answer that question here on the radio.
Back in 2006, Exhibits USA sent out a flyer to the Wood Place Public Library. The flyer told about the exhibit being put together as a traveling exhibit and said that it would tour Missouri in2007 and 2008. The rental fee would only be $500, whereas museum quality exhibits usually cost from $2,500 to $10,000 to have the exhibit on display for a four to six week period. So, the price was right and I thought all the country music and bluegrass fans in the area would really enjoy such an exhibit, so I checked into it. I got a tentative reservation on the exhibit, so we could have it here in California – but after finding out about what the costs would be above and beyond the $500 rental fee, I was afraid I was going to have to cancel the reservation.
Luckily, a grant became available to cover most of the costs associated with having the exhibit and I went forward with the plan. The first thing I needed to do was fill out a lengthy questionnaire, just to see if our building was adequate to display the exhibit. Then, I got the grant application and the real hard work began. We needed to plan programming and promotions and justify any expenditure we wanted to make in association with the exhibit. The application also asked for information about our community, our organization, target audiences and just a whole lot of information. Luckily, I had help – both from Linda Prior, the outreach coordinator here at the library and Deb Bailey, from the Missouri Folk Arts Program. Deb wanted to see this exhibit put in rural venues and knew that funding would be an issue, so she really worked hard to help us get the application done properly so the Missouri Arts Council could fund the project.
So, that’s part one of the story of how this exhibit got to the Library – join me next week to hear the rest of the story.

Hi, this is Lisa Marshall with your library update from the Wood Place Public Library.
I just received an exciting phone call, it was a shipping company calling to confirm what hours the library was open and when we would be ready to receive a shipment. The shipment will be coming in four large crates, so they wanted to be sure I would be ready to receive them.
Do you wonder what sort of shipment the library will soon be receiving?
Those of you who have seen the normal delivery guy bringing boxes into the library or me carrying boxes out of the post office will realize that we get books 2 or 3 or 10 at a time – so no it isn’t four crates full of books.
It could be new shelves for our books – but it’s not and as much as would like to replace some of our older book shelves – it would not be that excited abut a shipment of shelves - for one thing, they always come assembly required.
So, are you curious about what is being shipped to the Wood Place Public Library and why Lisa is so excited about it?
It is a new traveling exhibit current coming to us from Kansas City! The exhibit was put together by the Missouri Arts Council and it all about the work of Luthiers. Luthiers hand make and repair stringed instruments such as fiddles, banjos, dulcimers, etc. When you think about Missouri’s history and the traditions brought here by our early settlers – it’s easy to see how an exhibit about luthiers echoes our history.
Do you remember reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder books? Little House on the Prairie, etc – what musical instrument was small enough to go along in their covered wagon? The fiddle of course – and I can still picture pa playing pop goes the weasel for Mary and Laura when they were little girls. The fiddle came here also with the Irish settlers.
And think about the cattle drives – way back when, the stockyards were in Sedalia and Kansas City and what instrument did the cowboys carry? Guitars of course!
Ad to all that the Ozark traditions of blue grass music with the mandolins, banjos, bass, etc
The music we listen to today, has it roots in that early Missouri history and it couldn’t have evolved into the tunes we enjoy right here on KRLL without the early work of lutheirs. Your chance to learn all about their craft, how they make and repair stringed instruments, the work and songs of their grandfathers and ancestors – it will all be on display for you here at the Wood Place Public Library – starting in February, with a grand opening on Feb. 7th and activities and performances throughout February and early March. Yes, I’m excited – stay tuned and find out more about this exhibit and programs we have planned to go with it.
