KRLL Script for 2/3/2012
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

The library watches what collections are having an increase in circulation.  One of those areas is the movie or video collection.  Given the popularity of movies, we have purchased the following for you to enjoy.
The King’s Speech, You’ve Got Mail, The Proposal, The Blind Side, The Bucket List, The simple Life of Noah Dearborn, Sleepless in Seattle, Invictus, The Holiday, a set of three Brother Cadfael stories, the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, Julie & Julia, Roots, and First Knight.
The movies are arranged in categories:  Children (which are animated cartoon-type), Family, Drama, Comedy, Action/Adventure, Westerns, and Mysteries. We also have nature, travel, how-to, and performing arts collections.  So, if you have dvd’s in your collection you’re no longer watching, we would love to add them to the library’s collection.

If you have not received a copy of the 2012 Winter-edition of the library newsletter it is available in both a hard copy and an electronic version in a PDF format.  If you would like to have a newsletter mailed to you or would like to receive the electronic version, you may email the library at: librarian@woodplacelibrary.org  or call with your address or email address at 573-796-2642.

Also, a reminder that the library will be closed on Monday, February 20th, in observance of President’s day.

RLL Script for 1/20/2012
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

The structural repairs have been completed in the basement of the library.  Some of the floor joists were sagging and were beginning to pull out of the foundation where they were positioned.  Some of the joist had to be extended in length. To further brace and stabilize the floor, a large I-beam was constructed to run under the floor joist.  This beam was used to raise the floor on the north side of the building and rests on newly installed piers.

You may still join the adult winter reading club and try your luck at winning some very nice prizes donated by local businesses.  We have 92 readers registered for this program. For more information, call the library @ 573-796-2642.  Prizes have a value between $10 & $25 dollars.  The drawing will take place on March 2, 2012.  We thank the following local businesses for sponsoring this program:  The Burgher Haus Restaurant, Carol’s Beauty Shop, The Flower Shop, Jalisco’s Mexican Restaurant, Mel’s Dinner in Tipton, The Moniteau Co. Saddle Club, Patty Kay Interiors, Pamida, and Originals Floral & Gift shop.

We’re trying to keep up with the demand for new books, so I’m happy to report that we have the following best sellers available for check-out:

KRLL Script for 1/20/2012
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Two years ago today, January 19th I came to work at Wood Place Library.  The time has flown by, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working here.  California is good place to live and work and I am excited about the future of Wood Place Library.   Speaking of the library’s future, the previous long-range plan concluded in 2010.  Many of those goals have been met, but there were others that are yet to be realized.
Something I would like to re-establish is the Friends of the Library group.  In the past, this group played an important role in hosting events and fundraising.
Please consider becoming a part of the revitalization of this group. The Friends of the Wood Place Library needs YOU.  For more information about becoming a friend, come by or call the library @ 573-796-2642.

The library has partnered with the California school system to offer students access to their homework here at the library. Previously, Citrix, the school’s database, has not been available outside of the school facility.  Students may now access their account through our public computers.  They can create, edit and save their homework and can access it later on the school’s database.  We are pleased to offer this resource for the student community.

Have you had a chance to stop by the library to join the adult winter reading club?  This program rewards our adult readers with chances to win some very nice prizes donated by local businesses. Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

The Library will be closed on Monday, January 16, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I invite you to participate in our adult winter reading club “Snow Better Time to Read.”  This program rewards our readers with chances to win some very nice prizes donated by local businesses. Prizes have a value between $10 & $25 dollars.  The drawing will take place on March 2, 2012.  For more information, call the library @ 573-796-2642.

This has been a busy week at the library.  We have completed the inventory of the adult fiction collection which consists of over 4,200 books.  This is a project that allows us to discard books that have not been checked-out for several years, or pull copies that are in bad repair and need replacing.  During this process, we shift books creating room for additions to this collection. This is also an opportunity to clean the books shelves.  It’s a good time to evaluate the collection and determine what popular classics we need to add to have the widest appeal to our patrons.

We still have not heard from the AARP representatives in regard to the free tax service for seniors.
We have received some tax forms; however we have reduced the number of forms we will stock since have had to recycle hundreds of copies that were not used. We are happy to print any federal & state forms from their website.

KRLL Script for 12/2/2011
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

On Friday, December 2nd the California Elementary school kids performed the Character Education Music Program called “You’re a Star”.  Kindergarten through 3rd grade performed @ 1:15; and 4th & 5th grades performed @ 2:00p.m.
Students had been working with the schools’ music teacher for a few weeks to learn the songs they performed with Sue Kennedy, a singer/songwriter and president of Star Enterprises, Inc., a nonprofit organization, from Kirkwood, MO.  This 45 minute program allows students to learn through a music concert setting that by showing respect, being responsible and caring and exhibiting other positive character values, they can be a "Star" every single day.  Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Missouri Arts Council.  Wood Place Public Library is proud to sponsor this program.

On Saturday, December 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00, the library is hosting a ornament decorating event as part of the Christmas California Style weekend. We need kids to bring the holiday spirit to the library by embellishing a paper ornament that will be hung in the library throughout the holiday season.  We will provide all art supplies.  Just bring your imagination.  For more information, call the library @ 796-2642.

The fundraiser queen size quilt that we are selling chances on will be on display during the Christmas California Style weekend.  Chances are $1 each or 6 for $5.

The November Amnesty &Food for Fines campaign was a huge success.  There were 241 non-perishable food items collected in lieu of fines and many long overdue books returned to the library.  We also had patrons who did not have overdue fines, donated food and we thank them for their generosity. The local food bank has received the food items collected and were very pleased with the donation.

Join me every Friday afternoon @ 3:45 and on Saturday mornings right here on KRLL 1420 am, where you’ll be informed about new materials, events, classes & everything that’s going on here at your library.
And remember….People need libraries…..libraries need you!

KRLL Script for 11/25/2011
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

I love inspirational quotes and I wanted to share this one with you on this
Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something,
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge,
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes,
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,
Because it means you’ve made an effort.

It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they will become your blessings.

KRLL Script for 11/18/2011
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

If you haven’t made it into the library this week, you must stop in to see our new Perma-Stone flooring.  It is really beautiful and yet very practical.  Thanks again to all who contributed to the “Gala at the Eitzen” mansion and made this project possible.

The library will be closed on Thanksgiving day, but will be open regular hours Friday and Saturday following the holiday.

November is overdue fine amnesty month.  If you are you avoiding the library because of fines or overdue library materials, now is your chance to restore your library privileges and have fines removed from your account.  Overdue materials that are turned in will have no penalty, and patron accounts that have overdue fines can pay for them with a donation of one canned good per fine.  These canned goods will be donated to the local food pantry.  Returning long overdue items makes them available for public circulation again.  However, if library materials have been lost, they will need to be paid for to restore your patron privileges.
There are only 2 days left of the Book Sale Bargain Days which will end on November 19th, so come and fill a plastic grocery bag for $2 or a box for $5 with any items we have for sale.

There are only 3 weeks remaining to purchase quilt chances on the hand quilted, queen size quilt that was donated as a fundraiser for the library.  Chances are $1 each or 6 for $5.  The drawing will take place on December 9th.

Join me every Friday afternoon @ 3:45 and on Saturday mornings right here on KRLL 1420 am, where you’ll be informed about new materials, events, classes & everything that’s going on here at your library.

Are you avoiding the library because of fines or library materials that are long overdue?  Now is your chance to restore your library privileges and have fines removed from your account.  During the month of November we are granting amnesty for overdue materials and fines.  Overdue materials that are turned in will have no penalty, and patron accounts that have overdue fines can pay for them with a donation of one canned good per fine.  These canned goods will be donated to the local food pantry.  This week, notices were mailed to over 200 patrons and we have already experienced a good response to our amnesty program.  Returning long overdue items makes them available for public circulation again.  If library materials have been lost, they must still be paid for to restore patron privileges.  So, act now and return overdue books, movies, audio books and magazines today!

Bargain Days have arrived at the fall book sale and many are taking advantage of it.  You can fill a plastic grocery bag for $2 or a box for $5 with any items we have for sale.  We still have both fiction and non-fiction hardbacks; fiction and non-fiction paperbacks, children’s books and audio books.

KRLL Script for 10/28/2011
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
In June of this year, the library was the recipient of the proceeds from the “Gala at the Eitzen Mansion”.  The $4300 that was raised will provide funds for new hard surface flooring in the heavy traffic areas of the library.
A new rubber floor product will be laid in the foyer.  Perma-Stone tile will be laid inside the library from the front door, continuing around the circulation desk and totally covering the public computer area.
This is something the library has needed for some time, so we are very excited that it will be installed prior to winter weather.  Thanks to all who made donations and purchased tickets to the Gala.  And a special thanks to Rich and Pam Green for their generosity to the library.

This year’s fundraiser quilt is not only beautiful, but it’s being hand quilted.   Chances can be purchased for $1 each or 6 for $5.   The drawing for this quilt will be held the second week of December, in time for the holidays.  A color photograph of this quilt is on display now in the library, but the quilt will be on display in the library in mid-November. Thanks to all the ladies who’ve worked so hard on this fundraiser.

The hardback book sale is still going on, and the first two weeks of November will be bargain days.  You will be able to fill a plastic bag for $2 or a box for $5.
Thanks to all who have donated books for this library fundraiser.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

The September issue of Country Living magazines featured an article titled “Five Reasons to Dust off Your Library Card”.   The October issue printed a letter to the editor regarding this article.  The person wrote “this article served as a timely reminder of the many perks our public libraries offer-especially in this age of iPads and Kindles.  Today’s libraries are full of new technology, but they also continue to celebrate the printed word.  I appreciate the steady stream of patrons who continue to celebrate not only the public library system but the printed word.

This year’s fundraiser quilt is not only beautiful, but it’s being hand quilted.  I ask you, where can you purchase a queen-size, hand-quilted quilt for $1?   Each year, the quilting group that meets upstairs at the library creates a quilt for us to sell chances on, to offset the cost of utilities incurred while they are using our facility.  They’ve outdone themselves this year…stop by the library to see a color photo of the quilt.  I think you’ll be convinced to purchase chances to win this beauty. Chances can be purchased for $1 each or 6 for $5.   The drawing for this quilt will be held the second week of December, in time for the holidays.  The quilt will be on display in the library around the end of October.

Our fall book sale is going very well.  To date, purchased quilt chances and the book sale have produced $693.25.   Stop by to find a bargain, and help the library in the process.

I encourage you to stop by the library and check-out our fall book sale. The hardback books are selling well and most of the books are in pristine condition.  The sale will continue through October, so don’t miss this opportunity to find a real bargain. We continue to sell chances on the beautiful queen-size quilt that has been created by our “Piece-Makers Quilt Club” and Tuesday evening sewing group.  The quilt has an interesting pattern and is pieced in black, white & red prints.  Chances can be purchased for $1 each or 6 for $5.   The drawing for this quilt will be held the second week of December, in time for the holidays.  The quilt will be on display in the library once the quilting has been completed.

The library will sponsor a Character Education Music Program called “You’re a Star” , which will be held at the California Elementary School on December 2nd at 1:15 & 2:00p.m.  Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the Missouri Arts Council.
Sue Kennedy, president of Star Enterprises, Inc., a nonprofit organization, is a singer/songwriter from Kirkwood, MO. Sue has developed a 45 minute program that allows students to learn through a music concert setting that by showing respect, being responsible and caring and exhibiting other positive character values, they can be a "Star" every single day.  Sue wrote the lyrics and music for the songs and Steve Ivey, one of Nashville's producers and a Grammy award winner, wrote and produced the music.
Students will be working with their school music teachers for about four to six weeks prior to the performance to learn the music and character traits that the songs communicate. Kennedy will come to the schools' performances and sing with them in this dynamic concert.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
Don’t forget to stop by the library to shop the fall book sale. During the month of September, we have paperbacks books, for both children and adults; audio books on cassette tape and CD’s; Videos on VHS Tape and DVD’s and magazines for sale. You may come and shop for bargains during regular library hours. The hardback book sale will begin the 1st week of October.  Most of the books are in pristine condition, so it’s a real bargain at $1 each or 6 for $5.

We also have a beautiful queen-size quilt that has been created by our “Piece-Makers Quilt Club” and Tuesday evening sewing group.  This years’ quilt is pieced in black, white & red prints.  Chances can be purchased for $1 each or 6 for $5.   The drawing for this quilt will be held the second week of December, in time for the holidays.  The quilt will be on display in the library once the quilting has been completed. Thanks to all who are supporting the fall fundraisers.

With all the new technology we are implementing at the library, we have one more item to add to that list.  KOMU8 TV is telling the news in a different way with U_News featuring newscaster, Sarah Hill.
You may ask, how does this involve the library?   In an effort to get more people involved in this interactive newscast, KOUM8TV has placed a web camera in Wood Place Public Library and most libraries in their 14 county viewing area. If you have a community service story or local news of interest, a video will be taken by the library staff and uploaded to the U_News program.  KOUM8TV is the first station in the nation to give access to the air waves from the news set.  So…what’s making news in our corner of the world?  Come to the library to share it with Mid-Missouri.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

There was a very generous donation made at the end of last year and this donation was earmarked for upgrading our circulation system to Destiny Library Manager.  On Tuesday of this week, we were able to install the software and began using the program.  All I can say is WOW!!!  This software is amazing, and the library staff is very excited about the new tools available through this circulation software.  This program has the fabulous feature to automatically send email notices when books on hold are available and to send overdue notices.  This information will be generated without a staff member creating the email and sending it.  With a small staff, this is a time-saving step, as well as saving the library postage costs. We are in the process of collecting emails for all patrons, so we may take advantage of this great program feature. Besides having the capability of allowing patrons to search the card catalog, through the internet, they will be able to reserve books, and renew checked-out library materials.  We are working on inventorying the library’s holdings, and once this is done, we will launch the program to the public through our website.  Look for this new service by the end of the year.
There are library’s much larger than ours that do not have this sophisticated software, and we are very proud of the step we’ve taken to offer state-of –the art library services to Moniteau County residents.

Don’t forget to stop by the library to shop the fall book sale. During the month of September, we have paperbacks books, for both children and adults; audio books on both cassette tape and CD’s; Videos on VHS Tape and DVD’s and magazines for sale. It’s time for the library’s fall book sale.  The month of September, we will feature paperback books.  Hardback books will be for sale in October.  We are still accepting donations of books, so you might think about weeding your collection and help the library with this fundraiser.  Also, any time we receive a donation, and it is in good condition we check to see if there is a copy in our collection …if we do, we then check to see if it is in better condition than our existing copy and switch it out to improve our collection.  If we do not have the title, we may decide to add it to our collection.
We would be happy to add your donated books to our sale with the exception of old sets of Encyclopedias, or college textbooks.  We advise putting them in the recycle bins at city hall.
You may bring your book or media donations to the library during hours of operation.  They are: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday 10:00am to 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday & Thursday 1:00 to 8:00p.m.; and Saturday 9:00am to 1:00p.m.

We also will have a queen size quilt to sell chances on in the very near future.  This quilt is being pieced by our “Piece-Makers Quilt Club.”  We are most grateful for this donation for a fundraiser.

Both GED and ESL classes have begun for the school year.  They both meet here at the library on Monday & Wednesday evenings and follow the school calendar.
For more information about any of these activities or classes call the library @ 573-796-2642.
Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!!!

Join me every Friday afternoon @ 3:45 and on Saturday mornings right here on KRLL 1420 am, where you’ll be informed about new materials, events, classes & everything that’s going on here at your library.
And remember….People need libraries…..libraries need you.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

There are those who would say that working at a library must be boring.  There are times, when traffic into the library is light, but at those times, we are able to work at important tasks behind the scenes.
Since our busy summer with reading club did not allow for much time to work on our “to-do” list, we are looking forward to getting back to the tasks at hand.

The next big project for library staff is getting our card catalog online.  A large portion of this project is taking inventory and correcting any cataloging errors, etc.  We are planning to purchase the software this fall, and hope to have our collection uploaded by the end of the year.

Another fall tasks is planning & holding our fall book sale.  We will feature paperback books in September and Hardback books in October.  Fall is a good time to weed your personal book collection.  Any time we receive donations and they are in great condition, we check to see if we own a copy …if we do, we then check to see if it is in better condition than our existing copy and switch it out to improve our collection.  If we do not have the title, we may add it to our collection, at our discretion.  Any income we receive from donated books is added to our book budget to purchase more new books.
We would be happy to add your books to our sale items with the exception of old sets of Encyclopedias, or college textbooks.  We advise putting them in the recycle bins at city hall.
You may bring your book or media donations to the library during hours of operation.  They are: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday 10:00am to 5:00 p.m.; Tuesday & Thursday 1:00 to 8:00p.m.; and Saturday (9:00am to 1:00p.m.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

What do you get when you mix 78 kids, 86 adults, carnival games & activities, shopping for toys, games, & books, popcorn, cookies & drinks?  You get the Summer Reading Club’s Globetrotter’s Fair.
All I can say is this party, which took place Thursday evening at the UCC Multipurpose room, was a colossal success.  It took many hours to set up and decorate for the event and many wonderful volunteers to help man the games and activities, but I don’t think anyone felt that is wasn’t totally worth the effort.
These kids earned a 25 cent ticket for each book read or for each 15 minutes spent reading, and $1 for each program attended.  The 78 kids that attend the fair turned in a total of $2,110.50 in tickets.  The kids were able to shop at the Globetrotter’s Market, where they spent $1,179.50 in tickets, and they spent another $931 in tickets playing games, doing activities and purchasing food.

We had many parents ask if we were going to do this same program next year since their kids had such a great time.  It’s hard to argue with success, and this summer reading club program has been a roaring success.

We want to thank the ones who presented programs on Thursday evenings, the volunteers who assisted with daycare programs and those who worked at the Globetrotter’s Fair.  We want to thank the businesses who donated food for this event and the volunteers who gave their time.  It would not have been possible to have an event of this size without your help.  The Wood Place library staff says a very big thank you for whatever your contribution was to our Reading Club.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Everyone knows that the “dog days of summer” occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season, but where does the term come from? Why do we call the hot, sultry days of summer “dog days?” In ancient times, when the night sky was unobscured by artificial lights and smog, people in different parts of the world drew images in the sky by “connecting the dots” of stars. The images drawn were dependent upon the culture: The Chinese saw different images than the Native Americans, who saw different pictures than the Europeans. These star pictures are now called constellations. They saw images of bears, (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor), twins, (Gemini), a bull, (Taurus), and others, including dogs, (Canis Major and Canis Minor). The brightest of the stars in Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. In the summer, Sirius, the “dog star,” rises and sets with the sun. Today, dog days occur during the period between July 3 and August 11. Although it is certainly the warmest period of the summer, the heat is not due to the added radiation from a far-away star, regardless of its brightness. No, the heat of summer is a direct result of the earth's tilt.

We concluded our evening programs for summer reading club on Thursday with a visit to Africa.  Our guest reader, Margaret Fennewald read “Papa, Do You Love Me?   Afterwards, the kids used glitter paint to create jewels on an African Collar necklace fashioned from a paper plate.  During “One World, Many Stories” reading club, we have explored through books, presentations from special guest and crafts India, New Zealand, Australia, China, Egypt, France, native American culture, Antarctica, Music from around the world, the telling of Cinderella in various cultures, El Salvador, South America, Mexico and Africa.
Next Thursday will be the Globetrotter’s Fair where kids will be able to spend tickets earned by reading and attending programs this summer.  We are expecting a large crowd.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Our summer reading club kids took a trip to Mexico with Kathy Burns.  She shared a slideshow of photos taken on her recent 3 week trip to Mexico.   She brought with her, two members of the Hispanic Heritage Dancers who performed a traditional dance call “el Giagos”, which means chicken in Spanish.  Kathy translated the different moves the dancer s would be making which represented a hen and rooster.  While this may not sound very elegant, the dancers were fluid and graceful and performed a beautiful dance.  The kids were invited to take a quick lesson to learn the dance and then all performed the “el Giagos” together.   The kids made maracas for the craft.
Next week we will make a visit to Africa.  This will be the final summer reading club evening program at the library.

The library staff is busy making plans for the Globetrotter’s Fair; the party to celebrate kids who have participated in summer reading club.  Kids will spend tickets earned by reading and attending programs on carnival games, food and shop at the Globetrotter’s market for prizes and books.  We are expecting a large turnout.
This summer reading club has been so rewarding for the library staff.  We put a great deal of effort into programing and planning crafts to enhance the weekly theme and it wonderful that families have exceeded all expectations  of amount of  books read and attendance at programs.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Despite the high heat of the past week, there has been a lot of activity at the library.  Kids are working to earn as many tickets as possible to spend at our
End of Summer Reading Club Fair.

For 10 weeks our Thursday evening programs visited a new location in the world.  This week, our program focused on Central and South America.
Walter Juarez, gave a wonderful program on his native country, where he lived his first twelve years, before moving to California, MO.  We then visited Peru through a story and finished with a visit to Chile by creating a Chilean Rain Stick.
Creating the sound of falling rain was once believed to bring about a storm, thus the magic powers of a rain stick. Wooden stick rattles have been found in archaeological digs along the coast of South America and it is believed that the Incas may have been the have been the first to use the rain sticks.
Made from a long, hollow tube--traditionally from cacti that were hollowed by drying in the sun is filled with beads or beans. When the stick is turned over, the beans fall through the tube. A sound like falling rain would occur when the beans bounce off the thorns inside.
We’ve been fairly ambitious with our craft projects for the evening programs this summer, but with the help of parents and grandparents, the kids have gone home with a craft to remind them of the places we visited this summer during One World, Many Stories summer reading club.

Next week, we will be visiting Mexico.  Kathy Burns, will be presenting this program.  Kathy recently spent several weeks in Mexico and teaches the local English as a Second Language classes.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

During the summer, we enjoy hosting story times for several of the local day cares.  We have toddler groups and school age groups who come every other week.  It exposes the children to the library environment and hopefully will encourage their parents to use the library throughout the year.  It’s a great opportunity for me to get acquainted with kids and the teachers who bring them.  During the month of June we had 504 people attend our summer reading club programs.

While this is week 9 of our summer reading club, we have several children who have already completed their 11 week reading club goal, but they are continuing to read to earn tickets they will spend at the Globetrotter’s Fair August 11th.  Several of the kids have over $60 in tickets; one young lady has already earned $83 in tickets.
Needless to say, as hard as these kids are working, we must have a fair worthy of the efforts they’ve made to read and participate in our summer reading club program.

This week we enjoyed the telling of the fairy tale Cinderella, and how it is told in other countries and cultures around the world.  Nancy Lewis presented the program which included kids getting to dress their paper doll Prince and Princess with fabric clothing that had been pre-cut, but needed to be embellished with a selection of trims, beading, feathers and ribbons.

Next week, we will be visiting South America.  Walter Juarez, a young man in our community, spent most of his childhood in El Salvador.  He and his brothers will be presenting this program.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Thursday evening Phil Lewis presented a program featuring folk songs from countries around the world.  Phil played an acoustical guitar and sang many songs, to the delight of the audience.  The kids were given rhythm stick to keep time to the music.  They also did interactive songs in which they hoisted sails, marched in time to the music and sang along.  Music is important in every culture in the world, and it was a fun program and a nice change-up for the kids.
Next week, we will feature the fairy tale of Cinderella and how it is told in virtually every culture in the world.  Nancy Lewis will be presenting this program.

We haven’t forgotten the adult readers at the library. We’ve received many new titles which are on the New York Times’ Best Seller’s list. Our latest acquisitions

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

I am so proud of the involvement we are seeing in our summer reading program this year! Our kids are reading like never before, and kudos to our parents & grandparents for their efforts to bring them to the library for books and programs!!!!
At the end of every month I run a report on our circulation statistics and I just had to share this month’s results with you.  Comparing circulation from June 2010 to June 2011 of Juvenile and Children’s books, in June 2010, 313 books were checked out from the Juvenile collection; this June 648 books were checkout out.
In June 2010, 604 books were checked out the children’s collection; this June 1,219!!!   We are seeing many new patrons using the library… we are making 20+ new library cards each week.  We are thrilled with the growth we are seeing in the library, we depend on circulation statistics show whether we are meeting the needs of the community.

This week at our Thursday evening program, we traveled to Antarctica courtesy of Richard and Carole Schroeder.  Richard created a miniature model of Admiral Bird’s airplane with his dog sled team standing close by.  It was an interesting program that included two boys playing daddy penguin by standing with an egg on their feet for several minutes showing how penguin eggs are hatched by the male, while mamma penguin heads to the ocean for some deep sea diving until the egg is hatched.
Our program next week will be about A World of Music presented by Phil Lewis!

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Our summer reading club theme “One World, Many Stories” is an opportunity for kids to explore countries and cultures throughout the world.  Thursday evening we had the occasion to learn about our own Native American culture from two ladies who are members of the Omaha and Lakota tribes.  They both reside in mid-Missouri, one of which lives right here in Moniteau County at Jamestown.
This program was sponsored by the Missouri Folk Art Council.  Dona McKinney and Wendi Wald presented this informative program to 40 kids and their parent’s and grandparents.  They brought many beautiful items of clothing they created themselves featuring traditional ribbon applique and hand-beading.  They wore tradition dress down to hand-made moccasins and leggings.  They told stories that were typically told to children by their elders and have been handed down from generation to generation. They spoke in their native languages and shared about some of their traditional ceremonies.  Another interesting fact that I wasn’t aware of, is that Native Americans are allow possess eagle feathers, claws and heads for ceremony purposes.  Eagles are protected and it’s against the law to kill an eagle or for anyone else to have one or any part of one in your possession. Native American’s have to get on a national registry list which is out of Colorado.  They are notified when it is they’re turn to receive them, when an eagle dies from an accident or old age.
Our program next week will be about Antarctica and will be presented by Richard & Carole Schroder.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Last February, I mentioned that the library would receive the Libri Foundation grant which would bring $1,050 in new children’s books to the library and the books arrived this week.  The Foundation matches on a 2-to-1 ratio so a local match of $350 was given by the Moniteau County Retired TeachersAssociation.  This grant is adding 85 quality hardcover books to our children’s department.  We were fortunate that a generous patron gave money for the needed shelving to house this collection and to create space in both the Children & Juvenile collections.  These books couldn’t have come at a better time, as our shelves are depleted with all the young reader that are participating in Summer Reading Club.
The Libri Foundation was established in 1989 for the sole purpose of helping rural libraries acquire new, quality, hardcover children's books they could not otherwise afford to buy. Since October 1990, the Foundation has donated over $4,600,000 worth of new children's books to more than 3,000 libraries in 49 states. The Foundation allows the library staff, familiar with the needs of the library and the community, to select the books the library will receive from the Foundation's 700-title book list.

We are in week 4 of Reading club and our young readers haven’t lost their enthusiasm for reading or earning those all-important tickets they will spend at the Globetrotter’s Fair on August 11th.  We hosted 40 kids Thursday night as we visited Egypt through a story and by building a sugar cube pyramid.
Next week our program will feature two Native Americans who will share about their culture, traditional dress, arts, music and folk lore.  This program is underwritten by the Missouri Folk Art Council.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
The Gala at the Mansion last Saturday, June 4th was a lovely event.  The library received $4300 from this fundraiser.  We are so grateful to Rich and Pam Green for hosting this event at their beautiful home.  There were many volunteers who kept things going in the kitchen and we say thank you to them as well.  We also would like to thank those who made donations and those who bought tickets and attended this event for the library.  California is fortunate to have so many community-minded citizens that support the library and other organizations and activities that benefit everyone.

Check-outs for the first nine days of June were 1070 items…last year circulation for the entire month of June 2249!  Needless to say, kids are reading with a vengeance this summer!!!  There is one Independent Reader who has read his entire 12 week goal…and it’s only the third week of the program.  He’s going to continue to read to earn tickets so he may purchase the items he wants to buy at the “Globetrotter’s Fair” on Thursday, August 11th.   We are bursting at the seams on our Thursday evening programs which are held upstairs at the library. We’ve made the decision to move the fair from the library to the multi-purpose room at the United Church of Christ building.  We will have all the room we need for the activities planned for the end of reading club party.

Our Thursday evening program featured China, keeping with our summer reading club theme, “One World, Many Stories.   Our program was presented by two students from China who attend Missouri University in Columbia.  Their American names are Daisy and Arthur.  Daisy wore a traditional long brocade dress as she gave her power point presentation of the ABC’s of China.  She and Arthur shared with 42 children and their parents about what life was like living in China.

The kids made a Chinese Lion Dragon Puppet.  It was an ambitious project, but with help from parents and grandparents, the kids had a wonderful craft to take home to remind them of our visit to China.   Next week we’re off to Egypt!

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

We have registered 131 kids for Summer Reading Club.  I can tell you that the pace has definitely picked-up at the library.  Our circulation was up over 450 from last May!  This year’s theme, “One World, Many Stories, encourages kids to explore different countries of the world through stories, crafts, music , and folk lore.  We also will feature several special guests who will present the Thursday evening program about the week’s featured country.
This week’s program was on New Zealand and featured Kathy Kent and her therapy dog, Sadie.  Kathy Kent’s son is living in New Zealand, and she and her husband were able to travel there for a visit.  She shared her photos, maps, souvenirs and memories of this beautiful country.  There were 58 kids that attended with their parents.
I must say that I am overwhelmed with the attendance at our evening programs.  It amazes me how dedicated the parents and grandparents are making sure their children participate in reading club activities.  Great job to all those who make the effort to get the kids here.
Kids can register for reading club during regular library hours until June 4th. Next week, we will travel to China.  The evening program will be presented by Na Yang, who grew up in China and came here to play volleyball at Missouri University in Columbia.
We issue free library cards to kids living outside California city limits during summer reading club.  For more information about this program, call the library @ 573-796-2642, or check our website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org .

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

It’s not often the library has someone in the community ask if they can host a fundraising event for us.  Since the library receives only $45,000 a year in tax revenue, fundraisers are essential to our operation.  We are so grateful that Rich and Pam Green, who live in the well-known Eitzen Mansion here in California, chose the library to receive the proceeds from this year’s “Gala at the Mansion.”  June 4th is right around the corner and we still need to sell around 15 tickets.  If you haven’t made your reservation to attend, I hope you will do so. It’s a special opportunity to support the library while enjoying a special evening.   The Gala will be from 7:00-11:00 p.m. and the cost is $100 per couple. This includes an hors d’oeuvre buffet, 4 drink tickets, and dancing to a DJ.  You may purchase tickets at the library.  For more information you may call the library @ 573-796-2642 or Pam Green @ 573-796-0282.  I hope to see you there!

This Saturday, May 21st is the sign-up event for our Summer Reading Club, “One World, Many Stories.”  Kids may come in from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to register, hear a story and do a craft.  If you can’t attend during this event, not to worry, kids will be able to sign-up for reading club during regular library hours for the next three weeks.

Summer Reading Club is three weeks away and we are working hard preparing flyers, crafts, and booklets that will help our young readers keep track of their reading journey this summer.  Our library clerk Lindsey Smith, commented on the amount of work it is to create, print and assemble these booklets.  There is so much planning, prep work and organizing to ensure a successful reading club, but we believe that kids are really going to enjoy this year’s theme “One World, Many Stories”.
This year, we are making special effort to expand the Tween/Teen portion of Summer Reading Club.  They will have the opportunity to take a 4-session class on digital photography, and a 4-session Spanish class using Rosetta Stone software.  These classes will be offered in both June & July.  For these dates and more information about reading club, call the library @ 573-796-2642 or stop by and pick up a flyer.  This group will also enjoy their own party to celebrate their accomplishments during reading club.
We also will be hosting 4 area day care groups for special story times.   And the regular Thursday evening programs @ 6:30 during 11 weeks of reading club.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Classic Fairy tales are ever-popular at the library.  Everyone is familiar with Cinderella & Prince Charming who live happily ever after.  All the world is watching the royal wedding today, and it may create a demand for our copy of "William and Kate: A Royal Love Story" by Christopher Andersen.
The following is an excerpt from this book.

Theirs was destined from the start to be one of the most celebrated unions of the twenty-first century: he, the charismatic prince who would someday be crowned king of England; she, the stunningly beautiful commoner who won his heart. Prince William and Kate Middleton defied all odds to forge a storybook romance amid the scandals, power struggles, tragedies, and general dysfunction that are the hallmarks of Britain’s Royal Family. In the process, they became the most written about, gossiped about, admired, and envied young couple of their generation.

Yet for most of their nearly decade-long affair, William and Kate have remained famously quiet and kept their royal relationship a tantalizing mystery. Now, as their long-anticipated wedding finally approaches, journalist and #1 New York Times bestselling author Christopher Andersen reveals the intimate details of their celebrated courtship and offers a mesmerizing glimpse of the man and wife—and future king and queen—they will become:
For many, William and Kate’s union represents an opportunity to recapture the magic—the compelling and complicated legacy—of his beloved mother Diana, Princess of Wales. Part glittering fairy tale, part searing family drama, part political potboiler, part heart-stopping cliff-hanger, theirs is, above all else, an affair to remember.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

The visit from local author, Steve Wise on Wednesday was very enjoyable for the book club.  They listened and asked questions about the plot and characters of the book “Long Train Passing”, which was set in California, Mo.  I believe Steve enjoyed the discussion and the experience as much as the members of the book club.

A knitting club is forming at the library.  Sign-up has begun, so come in or call the library @ 796-2642 to add your name to the list of interested persons.  The club will meet one night each month.  If you would like to learn to knit, expand you’re knitting skills, or connect with fellow knitters in the community, this could be a great club for you to participate in.

Planning continues for the 2011 Summer Reading Club.  This year’s theme One World, Many Stories, is an interesting, but challenging theme.  We will be featuring a different country each week.  There will be special guests readers, fun crafts and a some special programs.
This year, all children who participate in reading club, will receive tickets for reading and attending programs.  The reading club finale will be “The Globetrotters Fair”, which will be a carnival-type setting.  Kids can purchase food, play games and shop for prizes at the Globetrotter’s Market with the tickets they’ve earned during reading club.
The library provides free cards to any Moniteau Country kids who do not live in the California city limits and might not otherwise be able to purchase a membership to the library.  A special sign-up event will be held on Saturday May 21 from 9-1 p.m., although kids may sign up any time to join. You may call the library for more information @ 573-796-2642.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Our Book Club will host a special event on Wednesday, April 20th at 1:00p.m.
Local author, Steve Wise will be joining the discussion of his book “Long Train Passing, published in 1996.  This novel is set in California, MO.

I went to Amazon.com to see if there were any comments posted about his book and I wanted to share this one.

“Today, over thirty five years after its debut on network television, The Andy Griffith Show remains extremely popular. I believe the major reason for its continued popularity is the hidden desire for most of us to be able to return to a simpler time where problems were usually minor and always resolved in 30 minutes. Yet, some of us did grow up in our own versions of Mayberry USA, and while many of the things depicted on the program were fairly true to life, we also know that many of our problems were quite complex and rarely resolved quickly. Such is the town portrayed in the book "Long Train Passing" by Steven W. Wise. While the setting is 20 years before mythical Mayberry, it seems extremely familiar. For those of us who grew up in small Midwestern towns, "Long Train" hits close to home, and takes us quickly back to less complicated days. The characters depicted seem all too real, mainly because the author has taken them fairly faithfully from the real inhabitants of his hometown in rural Missouri. While the story is extremely entertaining, the real joy in reading this book is to see the characters come alive in print and to feel we would know them if we met them on the street. Here is a chance to go back to a time when many of the complexities of our modern society were not present, but the drama of life and the triumph of the human spirit coupled with love overcoming hate are as current as today. Spend a few hours and let the author spin his tale. You will be greatly rewarded for your investment.

That's quite an endorsment!!! Come and join us for this special event at the library.  If you haven’t read the book, perhaps you will after hearing the discussion.

The Spring Hardback Book Sale items are now half price.  The half-price sale will end Saturday, April 16th. Sale items are located in the elevator lobby and are available during regular library hours.

KRLL Script for 4/8/2011
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Next week, from April 10th-16th National Library Week will be observed and the theme this year is "Create your own story @ your library®."
First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954.  In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. The first National Library Week was observed in 1958.
Help us celebrate National Library Week at Wood Place Public Library next week by using your library in whatever capacity you choose.
The library will host an evening Story Time on Thursday, April 14th at 6:30 p.m.  We will be reading Just in Case by Judith Viorst.  Story-Time will include a short craft project.  Stories and crafts are appropriate for ages 5-8.

Our Spring Hardback Book Sale items are now half price.  The half-price sale will end next Friday, April 15. Sale items are located in the elevator lobby and are available during regular library hours.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

April 10th-16this National Library Week…it is also National Volunteer Week and that seems very appropriate at Wood Place Public Library.  Since the early days of our library, it has been partially staffed with faithful volunteers.  Our volunteers do a variety of tasks, such as running the circulation desk, re-shelving returned library materials, assisting patrons with finding books and using our computers.  They do faxing and make copies for the public, answer the phone, and take library card applications.  One of our volunteers uses his many skills to improve our facility.  Our volunteers are a valuable resource and we so appreciate all they do to assist the library staff.
The Wood Place Public library board members are volunteers too, by giving of their time to help manage the library’s business matters.
Current Board Members are: Carole Barbour, Laura Burger, Tyler Davis, Beth Fennewald, Marian Gish, Jerri Korenberg and Rudy Shroeder.
Current Volunteers are:  Gloria Longan, Jerri Korenberg, Marian Gish, Naomi Pearson, Angela Holden, Norma Porter, Clarice Alexander, Stephan Marple, Joan Colozza, Kathy Shoemaker and Rudy Shroeder.
I would like to personally thank each and every one of our volunteers and board members for their diligence and dedication to this library.

The library will host an evening Story Time on Thursday, April 14th at 6:30 p.m.  We will be reading Just in Case by Judith Viorst.  Story-Time will also include a short craft project.  Stories and crafts are appropriate for ages 5-8.

Books are going quickly at the Spring Hardback Book Sale.  These books are truly bargains based on the excellent condition of the books this year. Hardback books are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  We also have media for sale this year featuring used videos, DVDs and audio books. This sale is in the elevator lobby during regular library hours.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
If you haven’t made it to the library for the annual spring used Book Sale, you are missing some real bargains.  I doubt we’ve ever had books in such excellent condition for the book sale.  You can purchase like-new hardback books for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  We also have media for sale this year featuring used videos, DVDs and audio books. This sale is in the elevator lobby during regular library hours.  The books have been selling so fast, that I anticipate the sale will only last a couple more weeks.
For those of you doing some spring cleaning and editing your book collections, please remember the library will have a used paperback book sale in the fall.  Please hang to them for us until fall when we are setting up for the used paperback book sale.

The adult students who were enrolled in the morning English as a Second Language class, completed 20 hours of study this week to earn an Incentive Award. Wood Place Public Library provided $20 grocery store gift cards as an incentive award for students who completed 20 hours of instruction. These gift cards were funded with local donations as required by the grant.  The class is met on Wednesday & Friday mornings from 8-10 am for 6 weeks.  Kathy Burns was the course instructor and was assisted by Dr. Chuck Massengill.
Most students enrolled in the class have completed Level 1 during the 20 hour course.  They may begin Level 2 independently and continue through Level 3 to learn at their own pace. This class was part of the Literacy Bridge Grant that was funded with an LSTA Grant from the Missouri State Library.  However, this program would not have been possible without generous donations from area business & individuals for the equipment needs of this project. Wood Place Library is proud to play a role in bridging the language barrier in our community.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
The annual Spring used Book Sale has started and it features hardback books at bargain prices.  This will be an on-going sale in the elevator lobby during regular library hours.  Books will sell for $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.  Used videos, DVDs and audio books will also be for sale. We will continue to add items as space is available, so check back often to see what has been added to the sale items. The fundraiser will continue for several weeks.  Should you wish to donate books for this sale, please note that we are currently accepting only hardback books.  In the fall, we will have a used paperback book sale, and will accept paperbacks at that time.

I received notification Thursday that the library has been awarded a “Mini Technology Grant”. This project is supported  by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.  We will be purchasing some new computers for the public to use, and the current public computers will be added to the computer lab upstairs.  We are excited to be getting new equipment, as the public computers are heavily used.  Last year, there were 9,302 people who used our computers.  We are pleased to provide this valuable service to the citizens of Moniteau County.

We have begun planning for the 2011 Summer Reading Club.  This year’s theme is One World, Many Stories.  We will be featuring a different country each week with stories read by special guests, crafts and a some special guest presentations.  As with past reading clubs, kids decide on their reading goal for the summer.   Those who meet their goal, will attend the “End of Reading Club Party” where they may spend the tokens they have earned all summer for some cool items.
We had great participation last year, and we hope we will have an even better turn out this year.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
I had the privilege this week of speaking to the local chapter of the General Women’s Federation Club.  It was a well-attended meeting and I enjoyed it very much.  I was asked to speak about the Wood Place Public Library, and changes that have taken place since coming to work at the library, and projects & plans for the future.

This group of professional women have sponsored the purchase of the Gateway Award nominated books for several years.  The purpose of the Gateway Readers Award is to promote literature, literacy and reading in Missouri high schools.  It also serves to recognize the authors and illustrators of books that are favorites of Missouri students in these grades.  Each year students in grades 9-12vote for their favorite book from a list of nominated titles and the award is given by the Missouri Association of School Librarians.
All of the award winning books are popular with young readers, and we make every effort to have the Truman, Mark Twain and Gateway award winning books available during our Summer Reading Club.
The library appreciates the support of local citizens, clubs and groups such as the General Women’s Federation Club.  Library funds are limited, and when donations like this are given, it allows us to purchase more materials for the library.  We value this group and the loyal support they have shown to the library.

This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!  Join me every Friday afternoon @ 3:45 and on Saturday mornings right here on KRLL 1420 am., where you’ll be informed about new materials, events, classes & everything that’s going on here at your library.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

One of my responsibilities as library director is managing the budget so that we don’t spend more money than we will receive.  I am happy to say that we have money this year to purchase for a collection that we had to cut last year.  Audio books remain popular among our patrons and we have appropriated funds so that we may purchase 5 new titles per month.
New titles added this month are:  The Help, by Katherine Stockett; The Confession by John Grisham, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson; and Tick Tock by James Patterson.
Coming soon are: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, A Heartbeat Away by Michael Palmer, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, the Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly,  the Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest and the Girl Who Played with Fire both by Stieg Larsson.

The library is hosting the second English as a Second Language course targeting the local Hispanic population.  The class is meeting on Wednesday & Friday mornings from 8-10 am for 6 weeks.  Kathy Burns is the course instructor.  Many of the students have never touched a computer prior to the class but have been able to quickly learn to use the equipment. Rosetta Stone software, which is widely recognized for successfully teaching language development to young people and adults is unique as it requires a headphone equipped with a microphone and the student must pronounce each word successfully to proceed to the next word or level.
This class is part of the Literacy Bridge Grant that was funded with an LSTA Grant from the Missouri State Library.
Wood Place Public Library is proud to offer support to the underserved Hispanic population of Moniteau County who wish to reach their educational goals, enhance their ability to be contributing citizens, and improve their job skills for better employment opportunities.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Wood Place Public Library is one of this year’s recipients.
The Foundation supports the concept that children who learn to enjoy reading at an early age continue to read throughout their lives. In order to develop a love of reading, children must have access to books which stretch their imaginations, touch their emotions, and expand their horizons.
At a time when more and more children and their parents and teachers are using the public library, these same libraries are facing increasing financial hardships and are unable to buy the books their young readers need.
The Foundation matches on a 2-to-1 ratio. Therefore, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new, quality, hardcover children's books if local sponsors can contribute $350. The Moniteau County Retired Teachers Association has agreed to sponsor this grant, and they hope to raise the maximum amount of $350.
The Foundation allows the librarian and staff, familiar with the needs of the library and the community, to select the books the library will receive from the Foundation's 700-title booklist, which has been highly praised by participating librarians for the quality and variety of fiction and nonfiction titles offered. The majority of books have been published within the last three years, but old favorites and classics are also offered.

This grant is addressing a need for more children’s books that became apparent last summer during Summer Reading Club which left our shelves depleted from the large amount of circulation in this collection.
Needless to say, we are very grateful and excited about receiving this valuable grant.  A special thanks to Beth Jungmeyer who spearheaded finding, & applying for this grant.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
We were so grateful for our new outside book drop during this last snow storm.  We had an incredible snow drift at the front door of the library which didn’t allow us to open for four days, and even then our book drop was still buried.  When we were finally able to chisel it out, (thanks to Greg & Gloria Longan), it contained over 120 items, all of which were dry and in good condition.  This would not have been the case with the old book drop which at best held about 35 items.  Timing is everything, and we didn’t get the new book drop installed a moment too soon!

We have enjoyed hosting Latham School’s 5-8th grade kids on Tuesday & Thursday mornings.  They come to use our 16 public & training lab computers while the library is closed.  They are required to have so much computer time to stay accredited, so they tell me the offer to use our facility was a life safer.   They also are busing kids here to check out books for book reports & research material.  They are such a nice group of kids and we are so happy to be of service to them in this time of need.
We have had many inquires about the free AARP tax aid.  They will not be coming to Wood Place Library this year.  However, you may use their services at the following locations:

KRLL Script for 1/28/2011
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Everyone is familiar with the tradition of the Groundhog seeing his shadow on Feb. 2nd , means six more weeks of winter weather,  but  I was curious about the customs surrounding “Groundhog Day” and I found out some interesting facts to share with you.
German tradition holds that if the sun comes out on Candlemas, the precursor to Groundhog Day, the hedgehog (or badger) will see its shadow and six more weeks of winter will follow.
So what is Candlemas day and why is it tied to Feb 2nd?  Camdlemas is a Christian holiday that occurs between the December solstice and the March equinox, therefore Feb 2nd is believed to be winter’s halfway point to spring.  When German settlers came to Pennsylvania they continued this tradition, using a groundhog instead of hedgehogs to predict the weather.
The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on Gobbler’s Knob which has become the official site and “Punxsutawney Phil” the official weather predicting groundhog.

How do we know that it’s the “offical” groundhog that appears?  For most of the year, Phil lives in a climate-controlled home at the Punxsutawney Library.  He’s taken to Gobbler’s Knob and placed in a heated burrow underneath a simutalted tree stump on stage before being pulled out at 7:25 on February 2nd, to make his prediction.  Phil is reputed by townspeople to be more than 100 years old, surviving beyond a marmot’s normal life span.  I’d say he’s has a pretty good life for a groundhog.

KRLL Script for 1/7/2011

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

The new outdoor book return arrived last month, and is now installed in it’s new location.
During the last year, we have had many books damaged after being placed in the old book return, located on Versailles Street.  This return was a recycled letter-drop from the post office and often didn’t allow the library materials to funnel down to the shelf inside. Often, the shoot was jammed with books that hardly fit the narrow opening, and therefore, items stayed lodged in the neck of the drop.  When rain or snow fell, the items would become wet and damage would occur.  It was also difficult for library staff to retrieve materials when many items were placed in the return.

After much consideration, the new location is in front of the library.  While this will not allow a drive-up drop-off, it will be a few steps to place materials in the new return.
The interior pull-out cart will hold 100 items and is engineered to reduce the force at which library materials fall. And it has a debris trap to keep materials safe.  The cart is padded, with a spring-loaded platform which allows books to slide onto one another safely while lowering as the cart becomes loaded with materials.   The cart may be pulled out of the book return and brought into the building for processing the returned items, while being protected from the elements.

The old book return will be removed from it’s present location on Versailles Street.

KRLL Script for 12/31/2010

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library.
The library will be closed on Saturday, January 1st, New Year’s Day.

While thinking about what I would like to accomplish in the coming year, I thought I should take the time to review the accomplishments made this year.  During this year, we totally rearranged the library! The support during that huge project was amazing, and we still hear compliments validating our efforts to make improvements.

We had record attendance at our Summer Reading Club programs & Story Times we provided to area daycare facilities.  During the months of May, June, July & August 1,037 kids came to our programs.

This has been a bountiful year for me, and a large portion of that bounty comes from my job here at Wood Place Library.  I’ve met so many great people here; my fellow employees, board members, volunteers, library patrons and those in the community whom I’ve come to know through their support of the library; I count  them friends.  I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the kids, their parents and grandparents attending Summer Reading Club events and the kids & teachers from the area day cares’ that walked to the library for months to attend story time.

Three library board members complete their term of office this month, and we say “thank you for the leadership & support during their terms in office.  They are: Kristen Imhoff, Carolyn Miller & Norman Rhorbach.
We welcome three new Library board members in January; they are Carole Barbour, Laura Burger & Rudy Schroeder.

This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library wishing you a happy new year!  Join me every Friday afternoon @ 3:45 and on Saturday mornings right here on KRLL 1420 am., where you’ll be informed about new materials, events, classes & everything that’s going on here at your library.
And remember….People need libraries…..libraries need you!

KRLL Script for 12/24/2010
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Christmas is a time of treasured traditions; decorating the tree, sending cards, giving gifts, singing carols, and anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus.

Although Christmas carols have been around for centuries, and certainly the first gifts were the frankincense, gold, and myrrh presented to the Christ child, our modern traditions of Christmas can be traced back to a twenty-five-year period in the nineteenth century; from 1823 to 1848.  Beginning with the penning of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore and the invention of the first Christmas card by Henry Cole, our modern Christmas traditions were born.

The singing of carols is the oldest of our Christmas customs.  During the previously mention time frame of 1823 to 1848, the ancient tradition of carols was revitalized after nearly two centuries of semi-dormancy.  Old-time carols were collected, translated, arranged, and published, and new carols were composed. There are many wonderful carols with American origins.  “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” was the first great American carol, composed in 1849.  It was followed in 1857 by “We Three Kings of Orient Are” and “Jingle Bells,” and in 1868 “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

In the twentieth century, the line between Christmas carols and Christmas songs blurred, as many new composers penned songs with Christmas themes rather than Christ-centered themes. However, these newcomers were often hailed as classic Christmas "carols" although they are not in the truest sense. Today, the history of Christmas carols includes modern songs, such as "White Christmas" and "Blue Christmas," which are often sung at parties and in homes right along with some of the more traditional carols.

In observance of the Christmas holiday, the library will be closed both December 24th & 25th.  We will open for regular business hours on Monday, December 27th.  The library will also be closed on Saturday, January 1st, New Year’s Day.

KRLL Script for 12/17/2010
Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library.

In the early part of the nineteenth century, England was suffering social problems and unrest.  The gap between rich and poor widened, and the well-to-do seemed indifferent to the plight of the lower classes.  At Christmas, employers refused to give their workers the day off.  Charles Dickens, who was so anguished and incensed by the social conscience at that time, wrote “A Christmas Carol, in only ten weeks after its conception.

It would be hard to overestimate the influence "A Christmas Carol" has had on our Christmas traditions and celebrations.  For the past 158 years, it has remained the most popular Christmas story.  When Dickens created Ebenezer Scrooge, he invented a character almost as familiar as Santa Claus himself.  The miserly Scrooge was the embodiment of callous indifference.  The story of his conversion is the story of the reawakening of a human spirit, of the Christmas spirit.  By writing A Christmas Carol, and by his public readings of the tale, Dickens did more than any other man to restore the Christmas spirit and to revive the Christmas festival in England and America.

In observance of the Christmas holiday, the library will be closed both December 24th & 25th.  We will open for regular business hours on Monday, December 27th.  Also, the library will be closed on Saturday, January 1st,New Year’s Day.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library.

We have been busy decorating the library for the season. This year’s theme is “There’s SNOW better time to Read.”   We will continue to have the current bestsellers and old favorites for your reading pleasure right through this busy time of year.

The library will host an evening story time on December 9th @ 6:30p.m.  Join me for the reading of “Guess Who’s Coming to Santa’s for Dinner?”  When Santa invites his family, and his friend Lars for Christmas dinner, things get a little raucous. The result is a fun celebration complete with Lars's pet polar bear and a flaming plum pudding.  This is not your typical Christmas story, but one I think everyone will enjoy.

Also, the Daisy Girl Scout Troup will host a holiday Story & craft-time on Saturday, December 18the from 10:00-11:00 a.m.  This event will be for 4-10 year olds, and will be held upstairs in the Learning Center.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library.

This is another reminder that the library is closed on Friday, November 26. But will be open on Saturday November 27th for regular hours 9-1.

This is the time of year that we count our blessing and openly express the things we are thankful for.  The list is longer this year than recent years. I have so much to be thankful for.
I am so thankful for my job with the Wood Place Public Library.  It was this job that brought my husband, Steve and I to live in this community, which we have come to love and feel at home in.

I am thankful for the wonderful staff that I work with. I am thankful for the compliments and encouragement from patrons who use the library; the library board and the many volunteers who serve the library.

I am grateful for the challenges of my job, as it keeps it interesting for me.  I am thankful for my past employment with the Morgan County Library which gave me the experience and knowledge to manage the library here. I am grateful for the generous donors who give to the library’s projects and needs.

Growing up in a small town, I knew California would be more to my liking, but I never expected to feel so connected in such a short amount of time.  The friendliness we’ve found here is extraordinary and we are grateful for the welcome that has been extended to us.
I am grateful for good health and happiness and all that life has to offer living here in California.

Hi! This is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library.

The library board met last night for the regular monthly meeting and during the meeting we held the drawing for the queen-sized quilt.  The lucky winner
Is Sylvia Scheidt.  I know she will enjoy the quilt for many years to come and she will surley appreciate it as she belongs to the Thursday night sewing group that created the quilt.  There $218 chances sold on the quilt, so it was an important fundraiser for the library.  Thanks again to all those who had a part in creating it.

Also, the paper-back book sale in the downstairs foyer will end on November 27th.  You may fill a plastic grocery bag for $2.  Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase books, and supplies for the library.

Spanish classes began last night for English-speaking citizens in the community.  If you failed to sign up for these classes, you may still do so for the 2nd round of classes that will take place in January.  We will offer both evening and day time classes.   If you are interested you may call the library (573-796-2642) for more information.

I’m excited to announce that the library will be purchasing a new outside book-drop for returning materials after hours.  It will have a new location as well.  I’ll give more details in an upcoming broadcast.

And this is another reminder that the library will be closing both Thanksgiving day and Friday, the day after.
The library will be open on Saturday November 27th for regular hours 9-1.

The library will be closing both Thanksgiving day and Friday, the day after.
Books will not be due on these dates, so don’t worry about your library materials falling due then. The library will be open on Saturday November 27th for regular hours 9-1.

There has been a great response to the Spanish classes being offered for English-speaking citizens in the community.  We have had 22 people sign up, and have stopped the registration process until after the first of the year. We will begin with two evening classes.  Classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Each group will meet once a week for three weeks, and then students will be able to continue the lessons at their own pace outside a classroom setting.  We are making the Computer Lab available on Tuesday & Thursday evenings, from 6-8 p.m. while the library is open, for this purpose.  Sometime in January we will begin day classes.   If you are interested in the future classes, you may call the library (573-796-2642) for more information.

We are just 1 week away from drawing for the queen size quilt. Chances are $1 each or 6 for $5.  The drawing will take place on Thursday evening November 18th.  Thanks again to the Thursday evening sewing group for creating this quilt for our fall fundraiser.
Also, next week will be the last week for our paper-back book sale in the downstairs foyer.  Books go on sale on Monday, November 15 for $2 per bag.  This is a standard size plastic grocery bag so many can be purchased for this low price.  And remember, proceeds from these fundraisers are used to purchase books, and supplies for the library.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

One of the joys of my job is hosting story-time for kids.  During Summer Reading club, the day-care schools came with school age children, and now that they are in school, the 2-5 year olds attend.  One day care brings their babies and toddlers as well.  This is an important outreach to kids and lets them become familiar with the library setting. The teachers tell me the kids think “library day” is the best part of the week.  It’s effort to prepare for them every week, but I am well rewarded with their happy little faces and frequent hugs.  As the weather turns colder, the day care kids will not be coming for story time since they must walk to the library.  I will miss them…but we will resume next spring as weather permits.

The library also has Story Time for the school age kids one evening a month through December.  Last night was the October event celebrating Halloween.  We read a story, made a crepe paper pumpkin and played pin the mouth on the Jack ‘O Lantern.  The November story time will be held on Tuesday evening the 16th, @ 6:30 and will feature a story about a West Highland Terrier that was lost but found a new home.  I will be bringing my own adopted “Westie” to meet the kids and talk about rescue programs for dogs.  The kids will be making a miniature book about a dog.

As the English language classes have gotten underway, there has also been interest in providing Spanish classes for English-speaking citizens.  If you are interested, you may call the library (573-795-2642) for more information.  We would like to begin having classes later this fall or early winter.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

ESL classes began meeting here this week to utilize our new state-of-the-art language software.  The feature that sets Rosetta Stone apart from other language software, is the use headphones with a microphone, which allows the student to pronounce words and phrases in order to move to the next word or level.  If you have an interest in learning Spanish or English, we are registering for daytime classes which will begin later this fall.  This language software was purchased with an LSTA Grant from the Missouri State Library.  However, this program would not have been possible without the generous donations from area business & individuals for the equipment needs of this project.  We are proud to play a role in bridging the language barrier in our community.

You may still purchase chances to win a beautifully pieced, queen-size quilt until November 18th, when the drawing will be held.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  This is a great opportunity for you to support the library and perhaps win a beautiful quilt.  Also, our paperback book sale continues, so stop in and browse the shelves for bargins.

Story-Time will be held on Thursday, October 28th @ 6:30 p.m.  Since this is so close to Halloween, we would love for the kids attending to be wearing their Halloween costumes.  I will be reading Plumply, Dumply Pumpkin by Mary Serfozo.  We will be doing some fun Halloween activities and a craft.  Story time is appropriate for ages 3-8.  Join us if you can.
We have received 2 large orders of new bestsellers the last few days, so check the newspaper for a listing or go to our website at www.woodplacelibrary.org and click on the new arrivals link.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

Our book club made a great choice for their October discussion.  I read this book when it was released in 2009, and found it so fascinating I couldn’t put it down.  If you would like to join in the discussion, you still have time to read the book.  The title is “The Help” by Katherine Stockett set during the civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. The main character, Skeeter, who was raised in the country club set, is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, and has been advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs her. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams.  Call the library to place a reserve on this book @ 796-2642

The library will continue our fall fundraiser with a paperback book sale in the downstairs foyer.  You may still purchase chances to win a beautifully pieced, queen-size quilt until November 18th, when the drawing will be held.  Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  Thank you for supporting the library in its fundraising efforts.

KRLL Script for 9/17/2010

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

“Is there a resource in a community that can truly touch all members; provide a positive impact on the full community; and open doors and opportunities to all members of the population?”  Yes….the library can touch the lives of everyone in the community.  We continually think of ways to reach the underserved in our population.  We are striving to reach out to Senior Citizens and the Hispanic community this fall with the classes we are offering.

We are happy to offer special computer classes for senior citizens at the library this fall.  The classes are: Meet the Computer for Seniors: Level 1 & 2, Internet Basics for Seniors, E-Mail basics for Seniors, Beginning Word Processing for Seniors, and more.  Each class is a single event and last for 2 hours from 1-3 p.m. You must pre-register and the cost is $1 per class.  A brochure is available at the library and classes are listed in the fall newsletter.
For more information or to register by phone for the classes, you may
call the library @ 573-796-2642

Soon, the ESL (English as a Second Language) classes will meet here at the library on Monday & Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:00p.m.during the school year to utilize the language software we’ve purchased with an LSTA grant from the Missouri State library.  This software will give instruction for learning English or Spanish. We feel this is such a valuable tool to offer our community, and we hope many take advantage of the opportunity.

The library is fortunate to be given a beautifully pieced, queen-size quilt for the library to use as a fall fundraiser.  This quilt was pieced by our Thursday night sewing group.  Raffle tickets will be available at our booth at the Ham & Turkey Festival and at the library until November 18th when the drawing will take place during our monthly board meeting. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.  You do not need to be present to win, and should you be the lucky winner, you may pick the quilt up at the library.

The library’s booth at the Ham & Turkey festival will be located across from the post office.  We have been given some darling items that will be for sale as well as many paper back books, unique handbags made from books & book bags. We will also have the Wood Place Library pewter Christmas ornaments, T-shirts and a cookbook, all at discounted prices.  Remember, the library will be closed during the festival, so please come and support our fall fundraiser.

We received our beautiful mascot costume this week.  It is absolutely wonderful and he will make his first appearance Saturday in the parade, and  you can see him at our booth until 1:00p.m.  Many thanks again, to Bill & Penny Campbell of Putnam Chevrolet for sponsoring the mascot and escorting him during the parade.

KRLL Script for 8/6/2010

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

I realized when I accepted the library director position that I would be doing many different things, but I never thought being sawn in half would be one of them!!!  This week’s Summer Reading Club event featured Bob Bohm, a magician who performed his “Need-to-Read” act. I think the 115 who attended really enjoyed it.  He involved many kids from the audience, and had a cockatiel to help him perform his magic tricks.  But I guess the finale was “Sawing the librarian in half.”  I had many kids ask me if it hurt to be sawn in half or if I felt anything…it was quite convincing to them.
He suggested that I not drink anything for a couple of hours, or there might be leaks, but I’m happy to say, that I’m all in one piece and glad that everyone enjoyed the performance.

On August 12, the library will host the End of the SRC party at the city pool, for those who have completed their summer reading goal.
So, this next week will be the last week of the 2010 Summer Reading Club.  I can’t believe that 12 weeks could go by that quickly. I will miss seeing all the kids from the area daycare’s who attended special story times, as well as the kids and their parents, & grandparents, who faithfully attended our evening programs.  We hope that we’ve motivated kids to keep reading through the summer while they had some fun and free events to attend.

Kathy Shoemaker is taking reservations for a “French Braid” quilt pattern class. You will be making a project that can be completed in 1-3 classes.  There will be a $5 per class fee.  You will need to bring your sewing machine and fabrics.  Cutting tools will be provided.  The classes will be held on August 17th, 24th and the 31st. from 9:30-3:30.
For details and to make your reservation, call Kathy @ 573-796-2524 or the
library @ 796-2642.

KRLL Script for 7/30/2010

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

One of the best-loved classics of all time, "To Kill a Mockingbird" has earned many distinctions since its original publication in 1960. It has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, and been made into an enormously popular movie. It was also named the best novel of the twentieth century by librarians across the country.

Celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, by Harper Lee are taking place all over the United States this summer!  After Lee won a Pulitzer Prize in 1961, two years later, the late Gregory Peck won the Oscar for Best Actor playing Atticus Finch. This multi-layered novel is seen from a child's point of view, Finch's six-year-old daughter, Scout.

What moves "To Kill a Mockingbird" to classic status is its morality and ability to draw sympathy out of readers as much today as when it was written in 1960. "To Kill a Mockingbird" deals with heavy issues--racism, oppression, injustice. Amazingly, it is able to handle these deep and sensitive areas without feeling depressing or preachy. Lee accomplishes this by making the narrator a child and allowing us to learn along with her. Lee's writing makes it is easy to enter the world of depression era Alabama. Despite all the flaws of the town, it is also easy to love many things about the place and many of the characters. If you have not yet read "To Kill a Mockingbird", you will not regret picking it up. If you read it awhile ago, it may be time to visit this world again.

This book is also the selection for the Wood Place Book Club’s August meeting.  You may join this group on Wednesday, August 18th @ 1:00 p.m. to discuss this important novel.
The library has several copies of the book, audio book editions and a DVD available for checkout.

Don’t forget….On Wednesday, August 4 @ 10:30 a.m., the library will be hosting a magician who will perform his “Need to Read” act.  We invite everyone to attend the performance.  All Summer Reading Club programs are free and open to the public.  Funding is provided by an LSTA grant from the MO. State Library.  This will be the last program of the 2010 Summer Reading Club.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

WE have some exciting news at the library.  We are going to have a mascot for the library and the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite character.
Penny Campbell came to the library a few weeks ago with this idea after attending an event that had two such mascots in attendance.  She said the mascots were surrounded by kids constantly, and she felt that this could be a great PR tool for the library.  Penny and her husband Bill Campbell have generously offered to sponsor the mascot. The library board voted to go forward with the mascot and let the public vote for “Woody” the Wood Place Library mascot.
There are 4 characters to choose from and we will begin the voting process on Monday, July 19, allowing the kids coming to the library for Summer Reading Club to be able to vote.  We will keep the voting open for 4 weeks.  Even if you don’t regularly use the library or even if you don’t have a library card, come in and help us choose your favorite.  We welcome your input and vote.

The Summer Reading Club theme for next week is Fresh Water & Wetlands.
The kids will hear the story “The Wild Woods” read by a guest reader and they will participate in an Animal Limbo.
We appreciate all of the guest presenters and readers.  It has made our summer reading club program a fun learning experience.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

This has been a very busy week at the library.  Tuesday evening was our Open House and it was well attended.  Thanks to all who took the time to come and support our efforts.  We really appreciated the great response and compliments about our new library lay-out.

I have been anxious to see the circulation totals for this June compared to June 2009, as it would be one way to measure the success of our new arrangement of books here at the library.  I am happy to report that circulation is up 486.  We see an increase in Adult Non-Fiction, Easies, Juvenile Fiction and Videos.  All other categories were up, but these had the greatest increase in usage.  We believe the 25% increase in circulation is a positive response by patrons to our refurbishment of the library.

Thursday evening, we featured Jason Vaughn from the Missouri Department of Conservation, who brought reptiles to the library.  The kids were able to see a salamander, tree frog and a turtle from the Runge Nature Center in Jefferson City.  Jason pointed out the importance of reading books and shared that his job required the use of field guides to identify wildlife daily.
The Summer Reading Club Evening Event for July 15th is all about Octopuses.  We will be creating a mural of an Octopus Garden that will hang in the children’s department for the remainder of Reading Club.  We will also have a guest reader for our story time book “Cowboy & Octopus”. Join us for this or any of the featured programs, as these programs are free and open to the public.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!!!

Tuesday evening the library will host an Open House to celebrate the new look of the library.  We feel it’s appropriate to take time to recognize and celebrate the work and effort that it’s taken to create the reorganization of the library.

I am very thankful that everyone got on board with this huge undertaking.  We have moved each and every book,( all 18,000 of them), every chair, desk, table, cabinet, unit of shelving and the circulation desk.

We were so fortunate to have a volunteer do all the reconfiguring of the shelving for us.  We will be forever indebted to Rudy Schroeder for his efforts. One thing we are very proud of is the fact that it cost so little money to do this project.  After selling the old, unneeded shelving, our total cost for this project is $66.

Please join us this Tuesday evening, July 6 from 6-8 p.m. as we celebrate our accomplishment.

The Summer Reading Club Evening Event for July 8th will feature Jason Vaughn, one of Moniteau County’s Conservation agents, who will be brining a menagerie of creatures to visit the library.  Join us for this or any of the featured programs, as these programs are free and open to the public.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
The Professional Storyteller, Beth Horner, who performed June 10th on behalf of the Wood Place Public Library’s summer reading club, did not disappoint. She entertained and delighted all who attended performances at various locations in Moniteau County.  Beth performed for 30 students at Jamestown, 50 students at Highpoint and 35 children at the library.
This was my first experience hearing a professional storyteller, and I think she managed to enthrall everyone in the audience, including toddlers, older kids, parents, grandparents, teachers and library staff.  She spun three tales while having the children interact with her. Beth performed on the autoharp and after the program was over, she invited the children to take turns strumming while she played chords on the autoharp.  I think every child participated and some children took a second turn.  It was a delight for the library to sponsor this type of performance for the children of Moniteau County.

Next weeks reading club theme is “Splish Splash” and we will feature Margaret Fennewald as our guest reader on Thursday, June 17 @ 6:30 p.m. at the library.
For more Information about reading club events, you may call the library @ 796-2642, check for the ad in the California Democrat or go to our website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org.
All events are free and open to the public.  Funding provided by a LSTA Grant from the MO State Library.
We have 137 kids who have joined the Summer Reading Club and the program will continue for 9 weeks with a special event each Thursday evening @ 6:30p.m.

KRLL Script for 5/21/2010

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
The library will be closed Monday to observe Memorial Day.  The library will be open for regular hours 9-1 on Saturday.

Thursday evening was the first special program of our Summer Reading Club.  Richard and Carol Schroeder gave a program at Proctor Lake on Fishing.  Richard talked about the fish in the lake and how to catch a fish using a rod and reel.  Carol read “Granddad’s Fishing Buddy” to the kids.   It was very informative and a lot of fun for all.  We had 18 kids fishing and they managed to catch 10+ fish.  We only had one near mishap with a hook landing in a little girl’s hair, so we felt fortunate in that.  It was a beautiful evening and fun to watch the kids learning a new skill.  A big thank you goes out to the Schroders for their time and talents working with kids and for helping with our Summer Reading Club.

We are hosting several daycares with special story times during our reading club this year.  It’s an opportunity to introduce a lot of kids to the library environment and perhaps create an interest in books and reading while they are having fun!

Next week is “High Seas Adventure” and we will focus on pirates.  Our feature story will be “Talk Like a Pirate.”  Carol Barbour will be our guest reader. Reading Club will continue for 11 weeks with a special event each Thursday evening @ 6:30p.m.  Information will be in the California Democrat and on our website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org.  You may also call the library @ 796-2642 for the weekly event information.
All events are free and open to the public.  Funding provided by a LSTA Grant from the MO State Library.

KRLL Script for 5/21/2010
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

This has been an incredibly busy week for me.  We are very nearly finished with the repositioning of shelving at the library.  We will be completing the Young Adult and Juvenile areas this week, which means moving lots of books, sore muscles, etc.  I visited two local daycares for story-time to talk about the summer reading club.  We’ve decorated the library for the Summer Reading Club theme…Make a Splash…Read.  Board Meeting was held on Thursday evening, and it always takes quite a bit of time to prepare financial and business reports for this.  And, last, but not least, Saturday is the sign-up event for Reading Club from 9-1.

We have some fun activities planned for our readers; the first 25 school age kids who sign up, will get to create their own beach towel with fabric paints. The first 20 pre-school kids will get to paint with water colors, a special “Make a Splash-Read Picture”.  Story time will be held every hour on the hour and I will be reading “Bats at the Beach” by Brian Lies.

Each reading club participant will receive a booklet or card to help them keep track of how much they are reading or being read to.  A new feature this year will be posters for kids in the read-to me and the independent reader categories. These posters will be placed in the library, where they can add stickers each time they turn in books and will show how many books they are reading or listening to.  Our teen readers will count pages they read and will receive incentive prizes, along the way as they meet their goal of 1500 pages.  We have great support from our local restaurants who give food coupons that we give as incentive prizes.  They are amazing with their continued support to the library.

Reading Club will continue for 12 weeks with a special event each Thursday evening @ 6:30p.m.  Information will be in the California Democrat and on our website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org.  You may also call the library @ 796-2642 for the weekly event information.
All events are free and open to the public.  Funding provided by a LSTA Grant from the MO State Library.

KRLL Script for 5/14/2010
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Change usually comes slowly and is not always welcome.  We are embracing change at the Wood Place Library and after redesigning the layout of the library, we are hearing very positive feedback from young and old.  It is very rewarding to see areas of the library that were not being utilized, now being occupied and enjoyed by our patrons.  We have middle school children who come in after school to use a new study area in the front window, adults and children enjoying the reading lounge, and the new children’s department is a big hit as well.

All of this effort was worth the results!!!  Again, I must thank Rudy Schroeder for all of his hard work.  This was an extensive project to remove the double-sided shelving from the library, take it apart, and re-configure it as single-sided wall shelving.  This change would not have been possible without his countless hours of work.  We will be in his debt forever.  Also, his brother Phil Shroeder gave his time to assist us with the project.  Thanks to Kristin Imhoff and Jimto Hogue for their help on Monday.  Our staff put in many extra hours to make this happen and I am very grateful for their help and support.  It’s a project we can enjoy for many years to come.  We would love for you to come by and see the changes.  The measure of our success will be an increase of patron usage, and the number of new patrons who apply for library cards. So, if you’ve been meaning to get a library card and enjoy the services provided here, now would be an excellent time.

The Summer Reading Club Sign-Up event will be held on Saturday, May 22 from 9-1.  Kids may sign up anytime from May 15th through June 5th.
We have many special events planned to keep the kids interested in reading this summer.  Hope to see you there.

We are receiving many new books right now, and you may find a complete listing in the California Democrat and on our website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org.

KRLL Script for 5/7/2010
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Children often participate in the Summer Reading Program for the fun activities and prizes, but there are additional benefits to reading during summer vacation.  The summer reading program can help reduce the chances of a child loosing skills gained throughout the school year.
Encourage your child or any young reader you know to join our summer reading club.

Our sign-up event is on Saturday, May 22 from 9-1.
The first 25 kids to join will get to design & paint their own beach towel.
Some highlight evening events during this 12-week program are:
May 27th Learn to fish with Richard Schroeder and the boy scouts
June 10th Professional Storyteller, Beth Horner will be spinning her tales
July 1st Scott Williams with the Dept. of Conservation will be teaching
about the wildlife living in the water.
July 8th, Children’s book Author/Illustrator, Riki Lipe will be sharing her favorite stories.
August 4th, Bob Bhoms will perform his “Need to Read” magic show.
August 12th will be the End of Reading Club Pool Party.
For more details, call or visit the library for a calendar of events.

We are so close to getting our library rearranged.  It’s exhausting, yet exciting.  Every time we set up a collection in a new area of the library, it seems like we have all new materials.  I think your going to enjoy our new lay-out, but you need to come and see for yourself.  Remember…the library will be closed this coming Monday, May 10th and open at regular hours on Tuesday, May 11th @ 1:00 p.m.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

It is such a busy time at the library with all we have going on.  We are preparing
for Summer Reading Club and this year’s themes are all about water and the
programs reflect that in a wide variety of ways. Bring your family to see the
professional storyteller, an artist/illustrator and a magician performing his
Need-to-Read magic show.  There will be programs at Proctor Lake on how to
fish, and discovering the wildlife that lives in and around the lake; programs
about water safety and clean water, pirates, and under sea-creatures; you’ll hear
stories and about rivers, lakes and seas and do craft projects about boats and
fish; and hear about reptiles that like water.  Sign up day is Saturday May 22
from 9-1 p.m.  We are planning a fun craft project that your child will be able
to use at the pool or the beach.  We will continue to sign up kids through the
first week of June, so come and be a part of this fun summer-long event.

We continue to work towards the re-arrangement of the library, which entails
moving books, shelving, and furniture.  We have the new love seat that
was donated by my sister, and many are already taking advantage of our reading
nook.  We are so excited about the coming changes, and we hope that you will
love the new lay-out as much as we do.  Again, we are sorry for the inconvenience,
but the library will close on Monday, May 10th and re-open on Tuesday,
May 11th @ 1:00 p.m.  We hope that you will come by and see the progress
we are making.

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

After 12 years, the Wood Place Public Library will undergo a change that will create a better flow and additional shelving to allow for growth of the print and audio/visual collections.  We are creating a new layout for all the shelving and fixtures in the library.  Existing shelving is being reconfigured and relocated.  The Circulation Desk will soon be located near the front entrance to the library. The adult non-fiction, children, juvenile and young adult, Audio/Visual and paperback collections will be in new locations.  We are creating an area for new books and will be placing our genealogy collection at the front of the library.  We will also be creating a reading lounge, which we would like to expand in the future with club chairs and a coffee table and reading lamps.

We will begin moving books and some shelving before the weekend of May 8th, but due to the disruption of library services during the major part of the re-arrangement of shelving, the circulation desk and the computers, the library will close on Monday, May 10th. Please forgive the inconvenience during this time, but we think you find it was worth not having access to the library for a day.We are excited about the changes coming to the library and would like to share them with you at an Open House to celebrate our hard work and vision for the library.  The date for this event will be announced soon.

We are receiving many of the new titles that have been ordered for the Summer Reading Club.  This year’s theme is Make a Splash-Read!!!  We have some really fun events planned for the kids, so we hope to have a large turnout.  I will be focusing on the Summer Reading Club program in future broadcast.

KRLL Script for 4/16/2010

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

They're everywhere: young and old, student, professional, homemaker, and retiree. No one profile can describe them, but they do share something in common: Volunteers ensure that essential services, the programs offering them, and the communities which benefit from them, continue to grow and to thrive.

The week of April 18th - 24th is a time set aside to honor those people who contribute their time, energy, and talent to the causes they hold important. It is also meant to increase awareness of the critical role that volunteers play in our community. The theme for National Volunteer Week 2010 is “Celebrating People in Action.”
When I inquired about my position at Wood Place Public Library, I was told that the Director is the only full-time employee and that the library relies heavily on volunteers.  It’s the one reservation I had about applying and accepting the position of Library Director.  In my previous library, we had just begun using volunteers the last 4 months I was there, since we had a full-time staff of 5.

I couldn’t imagine volunteers being dedicated to the library the way paid employees would be, but much to my surprise, I realize the volunteers who serve the Wood Place Public Library may be the exception to that rule.  They are like the postal service… Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night keeps them from their scheduled work times at the library.  They are a wonderful group of people, and I count it as a blessing to work with them and to have made their acquaintance.

Our volunteers are being honored at a “thank-you banquet on April 26th, but I would like to further honor them by reading their names in this broadcast.

Those who serve on our Library Board are:
Kristin Imhoff
Tyler David
Norman Rhorbach
Marion Gish
Carolyn Miller
Jerri Korenberg
Beth Fennewald

Those who volunteer at the library are:
Alexander, Clarice
Colzza, Joan
Crawford, Susie
Fletcher, Gwen
Gish, Marion
Hoeckner, Patricia
Holden, Angela
Korenberg, Jerri
Latham, Sue
Lewis, Nancy
Longan, Gloria
Pearson, Naomi
Porter, Norma
Presley, Jay
Schroeder, Rudy
Shoemanker, Kathy
Street, Racheal

If you see any of our volunteers next week …remember to say "Thank you for your efforts at the Wood Place Public Library! “

Thanks to all who made our Breakfast/Book Sale fundraiser a huge success!!!  We were able to raise $1,275.

KRLL Script for 4/9/2010
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Next week, from April 11th-17th National Library Week will be observed and the theme this year is "Communities thrive @ your library®."

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate.

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee's goals were ambitious.   They ranged from "encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life."

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries.   With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!"

National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration.

Help us celebrate here at Wood Place Public Library this week by using your library in whatever capacity you choose.

We hope to see you at The Great Breakfast/Book Sale Event on Saturday, April 10th, from 7:30 to 1:00 p.m.  Admission is $4 for an all-you-can-eat breakfast of Biscuits ‘n gravy - donuts and you’re your favorite breakfast beverage… Kids 5 & under are free.  Food will be served between 7:30 and 11:00 a.m. This is an important source of funding for items needed at the library, so your support means a great deal!

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

We are hosting story time on Saturday, April 3rd, at 10:30 a.m.  We will have a special guest reading “Duck” by Randy Cecil.  Duck is a carousel animal who dreams of flying like the real ducks soaring in the sky above her. That's all Duck can think about.  But then, a lost duckling waddles into her life. They become fast friends and end up helping each other...in the most charming ways.  Bring your little ones by to enjoy this story and the fun craft that follows.

A listing of new titles at the library is posted on our website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org. That list is also available each week in the California Democrat.  To reserve any of these titles, you may call the library @ 573-796-2642 to make your request.

We are in high-gear at the library preparing for the upcoming Breakfast/book sale event.  A special thank-you goes out to all who have donated books for the sale and an extra special thanks to Nancy Lewis who is organizing the book sale.  We hope to see you at The Great Breakfast/Book Sale Event on Saturday, April 10th, from 7:30 to 1:00 p.m.  Admission is $4 for a delicious, all-you-can-eat breakfast of Biscuits ‘n gravy or donuts and you’re your favorite breakfast beverage… Kids 5 & under are free.  Food will be served between 7:30 and 11:00 a.m. This is an important source of funding for items needed at the library, so your support means a great deal!  So whether you are looking for books or a great breakfast, this is the place to be!!!

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
First Lady Laura Bush said, and I quote, “Libraries are community treasure chests, loaded with a wealth of information available to everyone equally, and the key to that treasure chest is the library card. I have found the most valuable thing in my wallet is my library card.”

We all know that libraries are busier than ever, providing incredible service in these challenging economic times.  What if libraries went away, even for a day? What would the impact be on our town or county and the people we serve?

In the past week, we had 7 volunteers that worked 20 of the 39 hours the library was open at the circulation desk, and one volunteer who set up new shelving he is re-building for the library.

In the past week, the library hosted AARP tax preparers and they assisted 11 local citizens with filing their tax return.

In the past week, 170 people used the patron computers.

In the past week, we a hosted Story time during a snow storm and 5 children attended.

In the past week, several adult college students accessed and completed their homework from our public computers.

In the past week, we added 106 books to the library’s collections.

In the past week, we checked out 234 items to library patrons.

In the past week, our Book Discussion Group met in the library at their monthly meeting.

And upstairs in the Learning Center in the past week, GED classes were held for 3 hours on both Monday and Wednesday evening; Family Counseling & Substance Abuse Counseling held their appointments for 4 hours one evening this week; Homework Help was attended by 8 kids after school from 3-5 on Tuesday & Thursday; Census testing was conducted 3 days this week.

So, even if you weren’t one of the patrons that came to the library for one reason or another this week, those that did found this community treasure chest here for the taking.
What if libraries went away, even for a day? What would the impact be on our town or county and the people we serve?

Don’t forget about The Great Breakfast/Book Sale Event on Saturday, April 10th, from 7:30 to 1:00 p.m.  Admission is $4 for a delicious, all-you-can-eat breakfast of Biscuits ‘n gravy or donuts and you’re your favorite breakfast beverage… Kids 5 & under are free.  Food will be served between 7:30 and 11:00 a.m. You can also browse through a nice selection of used books at our book sale. Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

During the process of moving the adult fiction collection into the new shelving, I was amazed at what a great collection it truly is. There are a large number of bestsellers, popular titles, and modern classics.  This collection encompasses fiction genres such as, historical, mystery, romance, historical romance, sci-fi, psychological thrillers, westerns, Christian fiction and everything in between.  I encourage you to come and explore this collection…you may discover several titles you have been meaning to read.  I count it one of life’s pleasures to enjoy reading a great book.

April the 15th deadline for filing taxes is coming up fast.  The library has reproducible Federal and State tax forms available. There are also public access computers at the library where you can e-file your income tax return.  The library staff will be happy to assist you with getting to those websites.  The AARP Tax Prep service does not have any available appointments and there is a waiting list should there be cancellations.  This has been a wonderful service and they have assisted many citizens with their returns.

Our Book Club has announced their April book for discussion. They will be reading and discussing The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.  This book club meets in the library the 3rd Wednesday every month.  This group has a good time and would love for you to join them.  For more information, call the library @ 796-2642.

Join us this Saturday morning, March 20th at 10:30 a.m. for Storytime.  We have a Girl Scout troop reading and assisting with the craft afterwards.  The story this week is Rabbit’s Good News!  Bring you little ones for a cute story and a fun craft.

The Great Breakfast/Book Sale Event will be held Saturday, April 10th, from 7:30 to 1:00 p.m.  Join us that morning for a delicious, all-you-can eat breakfast of Biscuits with sausage gravy or donuts and you’re your favorite breakfast beverage…food will be served between 7:30 and 11:00 a.m.; while you’re there you can browse through a nice selection of used books at our book sale.  You may purchase tickets at the door as well.  This is an important source of funding for various items needed at the library, so your support means a great deal!  We hope to see you there!!!

Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!

Exciting improvements have begun at the library!  We started this week, with the process of adding to our shelving to expand the library’s collections.  A big “thank-you” to the California High School for donating their old shelving they weren’t using in their new library facility.  Another big “thank you” goes to Rudy Schroeder and his brother Phil for picking up the shelving and placing it in the library.  Rudy spend many more hours this week putting together and placing shelving, helping move books, and removing shelving that he will be cutting down to create wall shelving for us, which will require many more hours of his time.  We count ourselves fortunate to have such a dedicated, talented and hard working volunteer to help make this project possible, because without the generous gift of his time and efforts, these improvements would not be possible.  Thank you hardly seems adequate.  Stop in and see the progress and watch for further upgrades in the near future!

Just a reminder, that tickets are available at the library for our spring fundraiser: The Great Breakfast/Book Sale Event that will be held Saturday, April 10th, from 7:30 to 1:00 p.m.

KRLL Script for 2-26/2010
Hi…this is Connie Walker from the Wood Place Public Library!
Managing a library is a lot like gardening.   It involves, dreaming, planning, shopping and ordering new items, planting, cultivating, weeding and harvesting.

Typically, during the last days of winter, gardeners begin to dream of spring when we can spend time outside and put the plans we’ve made during the cold winter into action. We’ve poured over beautiful full-color catalogs and made a list of new plants we’d like to try.  We plan where we will place them in our gardens and borders; we’ve even thought about what equipment we could add to make the whole gardening process more productive and easier to accomplish. It’s always exciting to place an order and anticipate receiving our seeds and plants.  When they arrive, we tend to them until they can be place in the ground with the rest of our collected treasures, at which time we begin to cultivate and nurture the garden as a whole.  Sometimes it requires special attention to weeding to make the garden look its best and most enticing to explore.  But, the best part of gardening is the harvest, whether it’s a bounty of vegetables, herbs or flowers, they are the ultimate reward as they nourish our bodies, our minds and our souls.

So it is with tending a library.  Dreaming is a necessary task, as it takes vision to see where you want the library to be in 3-5, even 10 years from now.
I too, pour over catalogs for the items that will bring the vision to life.
I plan for purchases of books and equipment as the budget allows
I place orders and eagerly await their arrival
I cultivate the collections by choosing what to include or exclude
I weed items that are no longer popular, are outdated, or in poor condition.
But like gardening, the best part of all this effort is the harvest.
Our harvest comes in the form of patrons who come to the library, and get excited about the improvements we are making to the collections, enjoy the services and classes we are providing and by allowing the library to be an important resource for nourishing their bodies, minds and souls.
It’s glorious to see the fruits of your labors, be it a garden or library.

Next week spring classes begin. You will find full details in next Wednesday’s California Democrat or by checking out the library’s website @ www.woodplacelibrary.org.
Also…Mark your calendar for the Great Breakfast/Book Sale event on Saturday, April 10, 7:30 -1:00pm upstairs at the library.
